Here’s all 5 of my @secret7s entries this year in one post. The exhibit ends on the 24th and is worth checking out, and raises money for @mindcharity including through sales of each of the one off pieces that made the exhibition. Looking forward to trying again and getting involved next year!!
Art prints and postcards went out today for the start of the @hatful_of_rain tour this weekend in Yorkshire...limited edition runs of all 3 illustrations that feature in the CD packaging I put together for them...looking forward to seeing them on the merch stand!!! #watercolour #art #music #brushandink #ink #merch #illustrator #instaart #illustrationart #promo #handdrawn #creative #artistsoninstagram #artwork #livemusic #illustration #inkart #albumart #slmillustration #folk #illustrate #artist #band #gig #tour #drawing #albumcover #guitar #limitededition #americana
Detail of a space scene developed from my existing space sequence illustration from a long while back (the one with the guy floating away) which I put together as a background for a children’s science book collaborative proposal all about energy
This week I sent 6 framed prints to the Umëa Marine Science Centre in Sweden to be given as thank you gifts to some of the scientists working there for the past few weeks on recent plankton studies. I had to compile an illustration of my various plankton images especially for it, and printed them on some nice textured paper (sort of visible in the close up photo)...my biggest international order to date!!!
Appropriate post for Star Wars day?! Wanting you to be seduced by the darkside is kind of the opposite sentiment...we all have our own paths to choose!! • This can be purchased as a digital print in various sizes in my Etsy shop - SLM Illustration - at a very reasonable price!!
May the 4th be with Jabba soon, who’s still living in denial! Throw back to Inktober...seemed appropriate! #sketchbook #art #ink #reflection #mirror #monochrome #illustrator #instaart #illustrationart #sketch #maythe4thbewithyou #creative #artistsoninstagram #starwars #illustration #silly #inkart #slmillustration #tbt #londonart #starwarsday #illustratorsoninstagram #markers #artist #blackandwhite #drawing #inktober #jabbathehutt #starwarsart #draw
Posters and flyers I made up for @hatful_of_rain arrived not long back and I received this photo at the time!! They feature the new logo I designed for them and the artwork preview image for the album, as well as the usual tour info and quotes about the band. Received my own copies in the post today, hence the post, and am pretty pleased with how they turned out 😊
A Blue Shark - last one from the sunlight zone of my ocean illustration, and kept the image very blue in honour of his name! These guys are the most widely distributed species of shark, and generally aren’t aggressive to us unless provoked, though the males bite females when mating quite violently...however the females have a much thicker skin than males, maybe for this reason!! So there you go! More sea creatures to come soon - I’ll be creating similar posts of individuals from the twilight zone area of my illustration next so watch this space...
Here’s a Moray Eel for you all. He’s the largest type of eel. He has 2 sets of jaws - the outer set grabs prey and then the inner hidden ones in his throat move forward to bite and pull prey in (like alien!!). Eels are a type of fish and they open and clothes their mouths to pump water towards their gills and breathe...hope you are enjoying these fun facts, there’s only 1 post left before the sea creatures from my illustration of the sunlight zone are complete...
Here’s an elegant Manta Ray for your Monday evening pleasure! They grow up to 7 metres between wingtips, have 300 rows of unused teeth (though hidden under skin), and they leap from the water for reasons unknown - possibly to impress, evade, parasite control, or just for the fun! They have the largest brain of all fish and are super smart...and from a 2016 study they’re perhaps able to recognise themselves in a mirror - they swam in front of it repeatedly, examined body parts and blew bubbles!!! #seacreatures #art #sea #life #sealife #underwater #ink #nature #shapes #ocean #ray #illustrator #instaart #design #beautiful #mantaray #illustrationart #creative #manta #artistsoninstagram #illustration #amazing #marine #slmillustration #bookart #illustratorsoninstagram #artist #drawing #draw #blue
My first animation!!! Here is the full animation made for the launch of ‘Geoparty’ - an app where people and businesses can list one-off events and parties and then users can use it to find these events and fun things to do near them when in a new place. I was asked to storyboard and then animate their idea for a simple promo ad, and later on asked if I could create the accompanying music, for which I gave them 2 options and this is the one they went for. Having done neither animation or music writing and production before I jumped at the chance to try it out, and thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout the project and learnt loads!!!! Can’t wait to try some more in the future!
The Whale Shark! I love these guys, they look so cool!! This is the worlds largest fish - up to 13 metres long. This is one reason he gets his name, but they are also filter feeders like many whales too, swimming (continuously to stay alive) very slowly (3mph) with mouths wide open (up to 1.5 metres wide) sieving plankton and small fish. Despite swallowing their food whole they have 300 rows of teeth with up to 4000 teeth between them! They’ve been around for about 60 million years and are very gentle and docile, known to swim and even play with humans...hopefully I’ll get to experience that someday! #seacreatures #art #sea #life #sealife #underwater #ink #largestfish #nature #ocean #illustrator #whaleshark #instaart #design #beautiful #illustrationart #creative #artistsoninstagram #illustration #shark #amazing #marine #slmillustration #bookart #illustratorsoninstagram #artist #drawing #draw #blue
Into The Blue - Moonfish • No water surface ripples in this one as we are starting to move deeper into the water, and there’s only a couple more creatures left before I’ve covered all the ones I included in the sunlight zone layer of my large scale illustration. All the ones I picked had something/s interesting about them hence creating this series of individual illustrations. The moonfish (or sunfish depending on what country your in) was the first fish realised to be fully warm-blooded, which was only discovered in 2015! This helps it swim faster in the deeper waters it lives in than other cold-blooded or partially warm-blooded fish thus giving it an edge over predators and prey...they were previously thought to swim very slow!
Into The Blue - Cuttlefish • Fun Facts; Cuttlefish have 3 hearts that pump greeny-bluey blood around, they can mimic colours shapes and textures around them to hide, they will pretend to be female (even with just half of their body!) to sneak past bigger competing males to mate, the body half facing females can be used as a colourful light display to attract them, and they can change colours in rapid patterns like ripples rolling over them to mesmerise and catch prey - just watch blue planet 2 episode 3 when one hypnotises a crab...literally amazing!! (The added sound effects were a bit silly tho!) (btw despite all this they’re apparently colourblind!!) #seacreatures #art #sea #blueplanet #life #sealife #underwater #ink #nature #cuttlefish #ocean #underwaterart #illustrator #instaart #design #illustrationart #creative #artistsoninstagram #illustration #funfacts #amazing #marine #slmillustration #bookart #illustratorsoninstagram #artist #drawing #patterns #draw #blue
Into The Blue - Harbour/Common Seal • Fun Facts; They sleep vertically in the water with only their heads above the surface, they don’t have any external ears yet have highly developed underwater hearing, they can’t rotate their rear flippers leading to the caterpillar-like motion they have when on land, and their eyes are good for underwater vision but poor on land and they apparently seem to not see in colour!
